Alexis de Tocqueville was a French historian and political thinker, who is best known for his works “Democracy in America” and “The Ancien Regime and the Revolution”.
Tocqueville was active in French politics, but retired from political life after the coup on December 2nd 1851. He stressed that the importance of the French Revolution was to continue the modernization and centralization of France, which had begun under the Sun King. De Tocqueville was a classical liberal who supported and advocated parliamentary government. However, he was known to be skeptical of the extremes liberties of modern democracy. He died on April 16th 1859.
