Alexander Pope was an English poet, who is best known for his satirical verse and for his modern translation of Homer’s writings.
Pope was famous for his use of the heroic couplet and nowadays he is one of the most frequently quoted writers in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, together with Shakespeare and Tennyson. Throughout his life, Pope suffered from various health problems. As a consequence, his body deformed and his growth was stunted. This is how he got a hunchback.
Pope never married, but was known to have many female friends to whom he wrote daring letters.
