Walt Whitman was born on the 31st of May 1819 in New York. He was a poet and a journalist. He is still considered one of USA’s most influential poets. He aimed to transcend traditional epics and reflect the nature of the American experience and its democracy. In 1855 he published “Leaves of Grass”, a collection which is now a landmark in American literature.
Whitman eventually found steady work as a clerk at the Indian Bureau of the Department of the Interior in Washington. He continued to pursue literary projects, and in 1870 he published two new collections.He died on March 26th in Camden.
