Dalai Lama describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk. The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibet. When he was just two years old, the child who was named Lhamo Dhondup, was recognized as the reincarnation of the previous Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso.
In 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. This supreme distinction is a result of his non-violent struggle for the liberation of Tibet. The Dalai Lama has always advocated policies of non-violence, even in the face of extreme aggression. He also became famous for his concern for global environmental problems.
