Alice Walker was born in Eatonton, Georgia. She is known as a novelist, poet and active feminist. Walker is one of the most respected and famous African-American writers, but her beginnings were quite difficult, as she grew up very poor.
Walker started to work as a social worker and then as a teacher and subsequently as a lecturer. She participated actively in the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi in the 60’s. In 1983 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her best-known work – The Color Purple. Walker is also an essayist and a much-appreciated poet.
In 1967 she married Melvyn Leventhal, with whom she has a daughter named Rebecca. The couple divorced in 1976.
