Gautama Buddha (c. 486 BCE to 400 BCE ) was born in India as Prince Siddhārtha and became a spiritual teacher on whose teachings Buddhism was founded. After a life of luxury, he started austere meditation in an attempt to find the secret of life and death and observed long fasts. He finally achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Gaya and became the ‘Buddha’ the enlightened one.
