Elie Wiesel was born in Sighet, Romania. He pursued Jewish religious studies before being forced into Nazi death camps during World War II. He was one of the lucky few who survived. After that he wrote the internationally acclaimed memoir “Night”. Wiesel has also written several books and he subsequently became an activist, who spoke out against persecution and injustice across the world.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, a fact that inspired him to later found the Elie Wiesel foundation for Humanity. His wife Marion Wiesel is known to have supported him in this task.
